McIntosh High School leads county, followed by Starr’s Mill, Whitewater, Sandy Creek and Fayette County High —
The Class of 2022 maintained Fayette’s high average composite score on the ACT, continuing the trend of outscoring the state average and the national average on the college readiness test.
Fayette’s 2022 average composite score is 23.5, the second highest in the state and in the metro Atlanta area among school systems with over 250 test takers. It also ranks in the top four percent of 128 school systems in the state that had ACT scores.
The county’s average score is 1.9 points higher than the state average of 21.6 and 3.7 points higher than the national average of 19.8.
Among the 314 Georgia high schools registering ACT scores — some testing fewer than 100 students — McIntosh High had the 10th best score in the state, with Starr’s Mill High 20th, Whitewater High 22nd, Sandy Creek High 44th, and Fayette County High 50th.
All five high schools in Fayette landed in the top 37 percent of Georgia high schools.
Broken down by discipline, the county outscored the state and nation in all four categories. For English, Fayette averaged 23.2, compared to 21.0 for the state and 19.0 for the nation. In mathematics, Fayette averaged 22.7, compared to 20.8 for the state and 19.3 for the nation. For reading, Fayette averaged 24.5, compared to 22.5 for the state and 20.4 for the nation. In science, Fayette averaged 23.3, compared to 21.5 for the state and 19.9 for the nation.
A total of 657 students in Fayette took the 2022 ACT, an increase of nearly 10 percent from last year.
The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, math, reading, and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first-year college coursework.
“I am very proud of the class of 2022, along with the hard-working teachers who worked to open up opportunities for them,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “These students did not have an easy or typical high-school experience – the pandemic began during their sophomore year. Despite that, they have continued to beat the odds and find success – beating the nation on the ACT and SAT and recording an all-time-high graduation rate. I wish them great success in their futures.”
