Fayette Senior Services will be putting the “unity” back in “community” this weekend in Fayetteville when the annual March for Meals fundraiser will be re-named the Fayette Charity Classic that will feature a 10K Run, a 5K Run/Walk and a 2K Run/Walk.

The re-named event provides an opportunity for non-profits across the county to participate in a collaborative fundraising effort, said FSS Director Debbie Britt.

“The tagline for the event ‘RUN, WALK, RAISE’ is a challenge to residents and those affiliated with our community to participate in one capacity or another. If not in the race, then to raise their hand and volunteer to help with the event, make a donation, or leverage their social networks to raise funds and awareness,” Britt said.

Britt said the 2012 Fayette Charity Classic features a new 10K route which, along with the annual 5K, is USA Track and Field (USATF) certified and is a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race.

The Fayette Charity Classic will be held on March 17 at the Fayette Seniors Center across from the Fayette County Justice Center off Ga. Highway 92 South. The 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. The 2K Run/Walk will follow at 8:15 a.m.

The entry fee is $30. Britt said the participating non-profit of the runner’s choice will receive $20 of the $30 registration fee. For more information on the event including a map of the route visit www.FayetteCharityClassic.org

Participating charities include Fayette Senior Services, AVPride, Fayette Youth Protection Homes, Inc., Real Life Center, Fayette Factor, Promise Place, Fayette County Humane Society, Fayette Homerun Club, Souther Crescent Sport Foundations, Inc., Southern Conservation Trust and Healing Bridge Clinic.

The Fayetteville Police Department has issued a special event travel advisory for Saturday’s activities. Police advise motorists to expect traffic delays in the Fayetteville on Saturday, March 17, starting at 8 a.m.

The 6.2 mile route utilizes stretches of several major roadways in Fayetteville, such as Ga. Highway 85, Ga. Highway 314, and North Jeff Davis Drive.

Officers will control traffic on these routes between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. to insure the safety of the runners. Electronic signs have been placed in the area advising of the delays and times.
