Whitewater High softball’s visit to their young friends was a home run. As part of Read Across America Week, the Wildcats volunteered at Sara Harp Minter Elementary, helping students work on fluency while sharing their own love for reading.
Members of the varsity and junior varsity softball teams turned their free time into an opportunity to inspire others, reading to students at the school next door. Some players also chipped in at the school’s book fair and with Jodii Gorski’s 5th grade class, lending a helping hand wherever needed.
“It is my hope that our girls are able to see the importance of giving back and making an impact by providing a memorable experience for students in our community and bringing a smile to the faces of so many of the students,” said Whitewater coach Krista Wilson. “Being active and visible in the community is a goal of ours as a program, as it not only will hopefully build school spirit and a support system around softball and WHS athletics, but builds a stronger connection amongst students, teachers, and other community members.”
It’s not just about victories on the diamond for the Cats, and there are plenty of those, it’s also about lifting up others.
“We want them to understand that it is a privilege to represent their community, their high school, and the Whitewater softball program. Our hope is that by volunteering and serving their community, they learn to do everything by the Whitewater Softball Standard, which is with Pride, Passion, and Purpose,” said Wilson. “I am so proud of them for their willingness to give back to the community!”
