The Braves put on their hard hats and dialed down on some serious studies. As part of their study of volume standards, Natalie Whitson’s Oak Grove Elementary 5th graders reported to work at their “construction zone” to calculate volume in a variety of shapes.

Whitson’s classroom was transformed into a construction site, and all of the students were the crew members. Students worked together with their crew to calculate the volume of various boxes found at the construction site.

Whitson was thrilled to see each “employee” able to safely calculate the volume of each box found on the job site.

“I hope that this activity was engaging, required students to apply their learning of volume to the real-world, and required collaboration among the students.”
