Fairburn, Georgia — Theatre lovers and fans alike are always in for a downhome talented treat when Southside Theatre Guild presents a new stage play. I was invited to their exciting production paying homage to the classic movie and series MASH. An intense jam packed show – blending nostalgia, humor and heart while bringing to life the compelling stories of those working in the Korean War’s Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.
Written by Tim Kelly, dramatized from the book by Richard Hooker this stage play captures the essence of the show that found our loyal TV screens for over a decade becoming a staple of American television. What truly impressed me was the intricate details of the set: How the lighting and sound was perfectly synchronized to every moment played off well in such a cozy locale, like a tiny slice of Broadway.
Under the meticulous direction of Heather May, the Southside Theatre Guild crafted a performance that resonates with both fans of the movie, show and new audiences alike. Rising local actors like Vanessa Lundy (Lt. Nancy Phillips), Daniel Moody (Pvt. Lopez), Dee Dee Car, Wyatt Arnett, Eileen Baldwin, Tammy D. Hyder and yes even Fayetteville’s very own Mike Boylan morphed into Capt. “Duke” Forrest. All the cast made all the guest feel like we were right there with them.
Nobody ran off to their cars after the show – we all stayed and just lingered with laughter like old friends. Join me as the afterparty literally made you feel like you were hanging with the MASH crew at “Rosey’s.“
Peek inside for a little film about it all and get your stageplay engines going because they are working on “A Wonderful Life” just in time for Christmas and an electric Improv Show that happens every other Saturday. Maybe we should all buy Southside Theatre Guild Slumber Bags and just sleep outside until their next show, because I love it there! As I drove home from Fairburn into Fayetteville it hit me – sometimes you have to travel just a wee bit to feel closer to home. See ya back on the porch !! – @ThaisFlowers`
