SENOIA, GA – The Senoia Area Historical Society will welcome author Chris Skates for a presentation on his novel “Moonshine Over Georgia,” sharing true stories that inspired his work about the harsh realities of the illegal liquor trade and its devastating impact on families.
Unlike romanticized portrayals of moonshiners often depicted in popular culture, Skates’ novel captures the authentic experiences of those involved in Georgia’s bootlegging era, drawing from real accounts and historical research to present a more complete picture of this challenging period in Southern history.
Skates brings a unique perspective to his storytelling, combining his background as a former speechwriter and policy advisor for two administrations with three decades of experience as a chemist. He is the author of four novels and more than 300 articles and short stories.
“Chris represents a throwback to old Southern cultural traditions rooted in faith, history, tradition, and regional cuisine,” according to his biography. Born in Georgia, Skates has lived in five Southern states and 25 towns throughout his lifetime, currently residing in Kentucky with his wife, adult children, and two grandchildren.
This diverse life experience has allowed Skates to encounter a broad variety of characters and personalities, which he weaves into engaging, rich, and often witty stories that transport readers to different places and times. His writing draws on his experiences as a frequent “new kid in town,” his scientific background, and his passion for reading across numerous subjects.
The presentation will offer attendees insight into both the historical context of Georgia’s moonshine era and the research process behind bringing these forgotten stories to light.
The event will take place Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Senoia Area Historical Society & Museum, located at 6 Couch Street in Senoia. Doors open at 6:30 PM for light refreshments, with the program beginning at 7:00 PM.
Admission is free for SAHS members, while guests are asked to donate $5.00 per person. The public is invited to attend.
