Margar-etiquette,
If I want the food items at the other end of the buffet, can I pass someone in front of me?
Dear Reader,
A buffet is a wonderful way to enjoy a variety of foods, but it also requires a bit of etiquette to ensure a smooth and pleasant experience for everyone. The key principle to keep in mind is consideration for others.
General Buffet Etiquette:
- Follow the system set by the host or restaurant.
- Use only the serving utensils provided—never your own.
- Avoid touching food with your hands.
- Take a reasonable portion so others have the same choices.
- Always use a clean plate for each trip to the buffet.
Can You Skip Ahead in Line?
Generally, no—buffet lines work best when everyone moves in an orderly fashion. However, there are exceptions:
- If the buffet is set up in a way that allows people to walk directly to the dishes they want, skipping ahead is fine.
- If someone in front of you offers to let you pass, you may do so.
- If a buffet attendant directs you to move ahead, it’s acceptable.
Otherwise, practice patience—use the time to chat with fellow guests or scan the options ahead. A little courtesy goes a long way in making the dining experience enjoyable for all!
