The STARs shone brightly at a celebration for some of the county’s best and brightest. Honorees from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators’ Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program gathered together at a Feb. 28 ceremony hosted by the Fayette County Kiwanis Club.
To be nominated as their school’s STAR Student, one must have the highest SAT score and also be in the top 10 percent of their class based on GPA. Each STAR Student then chooses a STAR Teacher that has influenced their learning.
Fayette County High was represented by Shefali Tyagi, who selected Teronia Blake as STAR Teacher.
Sandy Creek’s STAR Student is Ariana Samuels, and the STAR Teacher is Monica Webb Dorner.
Starr’s Mill’s STAR Student is William Van Huffel, and the STAR Teacher is Nick Gillies.
Whitewater was represented by STAR Student West Clayton and STAR Teacher Julie Wolf.
McIntosh had a five-way tie for STAR Student. Caleb Claiborne picked Sara Knight as STAR Teacher, Madhavraj Premkumar picked Stephen Bain, Anthony Qin picked Alysa Johnson, Abigail Spencer picked Stephanie Sisk, and Jocelyn Wang picked Ward Abel.
Starr’s Mill’s William Van Huffel and Whitewater’s West Clayton were both selected as Star Student for Fayette County, and they will have a chance to compete at the state level.
