The Crocodiles are taking their math skills to a new level. Cleveland Elementary 3rd graders explored the hallways for shapes to study and determine their area.
The activity focused on finding the area and perimeter of various polygons. Students went around the school with a recording sheet and studied the shapes that were taped on the tiles. Before leaving the classroom, they discussed hallway expectations and went over how to find the area and perimeter of shapes.
Teacher Chelsea Zambujo was thrilled to see the students mastering a new skill.
“I hope students were able to take away that shapes do not need to be a square or a rectangle to find the area or perimeter. Oftentimes, those are the only shapes that are used with area and perimeter which leads to learning gaps,” she said. “I wanted them to understand that, while it may be difficult, it is possible to find the area and perimeter of irregular shapes.”
