William Lynn Weaver, M.D., F.A.C.S, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away on May 25, 2019 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, in Fayetteville, Ga. after a brief illness. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman Stanley Weaver and Ruth McIntrye Weaver, his brother, Stanley Weaver and son, Gregory Miller, Jr.

Dr. Weaver completed his undergraduate education at Howard University College of Pharmacy, Washington, DC in 1974. He then attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. where he received his medical degree and served as the class president in 1978. His general surgery training included a surgical internship at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colo. in 1979 and his residency was completed at Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Wash. in 1983. He served as a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps and as chief of General Surgery Service at Blanchfield Army Medical Center, Fort Campbell, Ky.

He held several leadership positions in surgery including Chief of Surgery at North Carolina Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C., from which he retired in November 2018. In addition, he served as Senior Associate Dean at Ross University School of Medicine, Dominica Campus in Roseau, Dominica West Indies, as Interim Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Sciences and Chair of Surgery. He also served as Professor, Chair and Residency Program Director of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga.

William Lynn Weaver was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served in leadership positions on several prestigious organizations including the American Surgery Association, Southern Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons (founding Course Director for the ACS High School Student Program), Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Southeastern Surgical Society, National Medical Association, Society of Black Academic Surgeons-founding member, Atlanta Medical Association, Atlanta Surgical Association-founding Member, and Sigma Pi Phi Kappa Boule Fraternity.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn Anderson Weaver, three sons Dr. Kibwe (Sylvrine), Aziwike and Jwyanza Weaver, two daughters Kimberly Olajumoke Weaver and Dr. Kimberly Hammond (Leon), adopted daughter Lakisha Bentley, five grandchildren (Khary, Karnell, Kibwe Jr., Vivian and Isabella), one brother Wayne (Susan) Weaver, former wife Dr. Patricia Weaver and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and many close friends.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Morehouse School of Medicine, National Center for Primary Care, Louis W. Sullivan Auditorium, 720 Westview Drive SW, Atlanta, Ga. 30310.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions for the establishment of a scholarship in honor of William Lynn Weaver, M.D. at Morehouse School of Medicine.
