A Fayette County man on Oct. 17 was convicted of aggravated assault stemming from an early 2018 incident when he fired into a vehicle driven by his child’s mother and struck the child’s grandmother in the leg.
Alvin T. Crouch, 28, was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced by Fayette County Superior Court Judge Scott Ballard to 20 years, with the first five years to be served in prison.
District Attorney Ben Coker said Crouch was convicted of shooting into a car driven by the 60-year-old victim, hitting her in the leg. Investigator Karl Duggan, with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, was the lead investigator on the case. The victim testified, along with members of both law enforcement and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Coker said the trial lasted eight days.
Assistant District Attorneys David Studdard and Christy Jindra, with the Fayette County District Attorney’s Office, tried the State of Georgia vs. Alvin Treon Crouch in front of a jury beginning Oct. 8.
“The jury’s verdict reaffirms our commitment to the safety and security of the citizens of Fayette County. It sends a message that this type of lawlessness will not be tolerated,” said Studdard.
Crouch was originally charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct. The jury convicted Crouch of aggravated assault and acquitted on the other charges.
Commenting on the case, Coker said, “This case was hard fought on both sides. I am proud of my office and law enforcement for the hard work that they put into this case. I would also like to thank the jury for their verdict.”
Pertaining to the incident, Sheriff Barry Babb at the time said deputies were initially called to a Callaway Road residence southeast of Fayetteville in connection to a gunshot victim. Deputies arrived to find a woman in a vehicle who had been shot in the leg.
Babb said the incident unfolded when the female driver and her mother dropped her child off at Crouch’s home on South Jeff Davis Drive. Crouch is the father of the child.
Crouch and the child’s mother became involved in a verbal altercation at his residence, Babb said, noting that after the mother and grandmother left the residence Crouch entered his vehicle and began to follow.
At one point Crouch rammed the woman’s vehicle and, while ramming the vehicle, fired a shot into the driver’s side back door. The bullet struck the grandmother in the leg, Babb said.
The child’s mother pulled into a driveway and began blowing the horn. Residents came outside, assessed the situation and called 911, Babb said.
Babb said the gunshot victim was transported to Grady Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Crouch was subsequently arrested without incident at his South Jeff Davis Drive home.
