Mr. Elbert Bentley “Jack” Caldwell, age 91, of Fayetteville Ga, died Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Azalea Estates in Fayetteville Ga.
Mr. Caldwell was born January 24, 1927, in Taylor County to the late Johnnie William and Mattie Stalnaker Caldwell. In the 1950’s Mr. Caldwell served as the first Chief of Upson County Police and became a revenue agent for Georgia Department of Revenue. Then in 1961 he became a parole officer for the Pardons and Parole Board for the State of Georgia. In 1967 he served as warden for several institutions with the Georgia Department of Corrections which included the Georgia Industrial Institution in Alto, Ga., Georgia Diagnostic Center, Jackson, Ga. and the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Ga. Mr. Caldwell retired with 36 years of service as deputy commissioner of the prison system for the State of Georgia. He was a lifetime member of the Peace Officers Association, Mason, Shriner, and a WWII U.S. Army Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Caldwell of Fayetteville; daughter, Lynda (David) Higginbotham of Fayetteville; sons, Mike Caldwell of Bushnell Fla. and Michael M. Scott (Barbara) of Los Angles Calif.; sister, Betty Caldwell Sanders of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Chad (Julie) Holcombe, Kelly (Drew) Rickman, Candy (Bobby) Clay, and Jack W. Caldwell, Zachary and Kyle Scott; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Inez C. Eubanks, Minnie C. Daniel, and Dr. Hazel C. Cotney; and brother, Johnnie L. Caldwell Sr.
Funeral arrangements for Mr. Caldwell were held on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial in Southview Cemetery. The family received friends on Monday, February 19, 2018 from 10 – 11 a.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.
