A recent letter to the editor from a McIntosh High School student concerned about the inability to hold field sports at the school was addressed by Assistant Superintendent Mike Sanders.
The student’s letter noted that events such as long jump, pole vault and high jump were disrupted and field event locations destroyed during the installation process for the new turf on the football field.
Pertaining to the concern, Sanders explained that the turf at all five high schools were set to be replaced. The turf project at Sandy Creek High was previously completed. McIntosh High and Whitewater High came next.
Sanders said the school system realized that track and various field sports would be unfortunately disrupted, adding that Whitewater and McIntosh made alternative arrangements to keep the sports going, with locations provided to practice and to hold competitions in sports such as track, the various field sports, lacrosse and soccer.
The issue was with field events, Sanders said, adding that the various track and field sports were not able to play on-site while the work was ongoing, Sanders said.
Some of the work dealt with not only the fields, but with the end zone areas. One of those was the old scoreboard at Whitewater which is being replaced by the booster club.
To address the work, projects at the four remaining schools were bid together to save on costs, said Sanders.
The turf replacement work at the schools will have been completed by the beginning of the new school year, he said.
It was in the fall that the Fayette County Board of Education approved a bid to replace the turf at McIntosh, Starr’s Mill, Whitewater and Fayette County high schools.
