Matthew James Burchfield, Jr., (69), known also as Jim and James, passed away September 6, 2016.
Jim was a loyal husband, devoted father, veteran of the United States Air Force, a graduate from Auburn University, engineer for the FAA for over 30 years, and a dedicated follower of the Lord. Active in all aspects of life, he was particularly devoted to his family and his church where he was a teacher in the New Hope preschool ministry. With an inquisitive mind and many personal interests, he was always outside working around the house, tending to his citrus trees, running, fishing, fixing something, or working on his amateur radio equipment. He was most widely known to his family and friends as having a true servant’s heart who loved people and was always the first to pitch in and lend a helping hand.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Matthew and Flora Burchfield Sr. and his sister Paula Bachman. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cheryl, daughter Elizabeth Chao (Ed); sister Vicki Burchfield Eng (Jeff); several nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends.
A memorial service took place Friday, September 9, 2016, at 2:30 p.m., at New Hope Baptist Church – North, with Rev. Barry Thompson, Rev. Hugh Kirby, and Rev. Rhys Stenner officiating. The family received friends from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Preschool Ministry, www.newhopebc.org.
