The Cathedral of Christ the King will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a church on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m.
Christ the King began in a living room with 19 people in 1996 and, after a few weeks, moved into the chapel of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City.
After a couple of years, the church purchased 12 acres of land but continued to meet in the funeral home for more than six years.
Finally, in 2002, the construction of the new sanctuary was completed and the congregation occupied its new home at 4881 Ga. Highway 34 East in Sharpsburg. A few years later, an additional building, with fellowship hall and classrooms, was added.
The church was known as “Christ the King Church” until 2008 when the founding pastor, Father David Epps, was installed as the Bishop of Georgia and Tennessee. When that occurred, the church was given the designation of the diocesan “cathedral,” and now serves as the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of the Mid-South.
The guest preacher for this anniversary service will be The Most Rev. Craig Bates of New York. Bates is the International Patriarch of the International Communion of the Charismatic Episcopal Church, the Primate for North America, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Malverne.
