Cornerstone United Methodist Church announced this week that Rev. Dr. Scott Pickering has been welcomed as its new senior pastor.
Pickering has served at four previous churches: Mt. Pleasant UMC (Calhoun), Clarkdale UMC, Hopewell UMC (Tyrone), and County Line UMC (Acworth).
He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in psychology from Georgia Southern University. He earned a Master of Theological Studies from Candler School of Theology at Emory University and was presented with a Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in 2015 specializing in church leadership excellence.
Pastor Scott is an Eagle Scout and remains very active in Scouting. He has served as a shows director at 11 National Order of the Arrow Conferences and four National Boy Scout Jamborees. In 1998, he was presented with the Gold Congressional Medal during a ceremony in the rotunda of the nation’s Capitol.
Over the past six years he has served on the North Georgia Conference’s Board of Ordained Ministry in leadership positions on the Clergy Sexual Ethics subcommittee and as chairperson of the Interviews subcommittee. Recently he has been asked to serve on the Board of Directors for the General Commission on United Methodist Men for the next quadrennium.
Pastor Scott enjoys travelling, reading, and the great outdoors. He believes that one of the most critical ministries for a church is mission work within the community, region, and international arenas. Pastor Scott has been known to offer free heart stress tests by jumping out and scaring parishioners, and his quick wit keeps everyone laughing. (He is banned from “bouncy houses” after breaking his foot last fall.)
