SMHS takes cup again

Starr’s Mill High School took home the Directors Cup in AAAAA for the second straight year, with McIntosh and Northgate finishing in the top five in the same classification. 

The annual award, presented in each classification by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association, goes to the school with the highest cumulative point total based on its performance in all competitive sports. Starr’s Mill accumulated 1,172 points. 

Cambridge High (1,144) in north Fulton County came in second in AAAAA and Allatoona High (1,092) in Cobb County was third. McIntosh (997) finished fourth and Northgate (868) came in fifth. 

In AAAAA boys rankings, Allatoona (672) was the leader, followed by Cambridge (555), Starr’s Mill (542), McIntosh (505), Gainesville (476.5) and Northgate (399). 

The top schools in the AAAAA girls category were Starr’s Mill (630), Cambridge (589), Columbus (526), McIntosh (492) and Northgate (469). 

The point system established by the GADA awards 100 points for a state championship down to 25 for a team that reaches the state playoffs. 

Starr’s Mill won the overall title without finishing first in any specific sport. But the Panthers took the runner-up spot in cheerleading and boys tennis along with semifinal finishes in girls lacrosse and girls soccer as well as fourth-place spots in boys and girls track and golf. 

McIntosh brought home the state championship in girls soccer, placed second in coed cheerleading and reached the semifinals in boys basketball. 

Northgate took the state title in cheerleading and was runner-up in boys soccer. The football and girls soccer teams reached the semifinals. 

In AAAA, Whitewater rode a second-place cheerleading finish and a third-place ranking in boys cross-country to 

take 11th place overall on the Directors Cup list. Whitewater came in third on the AAAA girls rankings and Sandy Creek was 16th on the boys side. 

In the A classification, Landmark was eighth overall, fifth in boys sports and 12th in girls sports. The school won state championships in boys track as well as boys and girls cross-country. The volleyball team finished second and the girls track squad came in third.
