Incumbent school board members win in Coweta as Ferguson and Crane headed for run-off

Voter turn-out was light in Coweta County for the May 24 elections. East Coweta and Fayette residents elected a new District 72 representative while the District 3 Congressional race resulted in a run-off election in July.

The contest for the District 3 Congressional seat held by Lynn Westmoreland will result in a run-off between state Sen. Mike Crane, who received 26.92 percent of the vote, and Mayor Drew Ferguson, who received 26.77 percent. Fayette County businessman Jim Pace came in third with 23 percent of the vote. The remaining four candidates each received less than 10 percent of the vote.

The run-off election will be held July 26.

The District 29 state Senate seat vacated by Mike Crane was won by Matt Brass who took 82.89 percent of the vote over Hayden Marlowe who received 17.11 percent.

The District 72 House seat vacated by Rep. Matt Ramsey and inclding portions of Fayette and Coweta counties was won by Josh Bonner who received 59.63 percent of the vote. Lisa Inagawa posted a second place finish with 26.04 percent of the vote and with James Clifton 14.33 percent.

In the only contested race for the Coweta County Commission, District 1 incumbent Paul Poole won with 54.10 percent of the vote while challengers J.B. Pendley took 32.02 percent of the vote and Gary DeGeorge received 13.78 percent.

Coweta voters elected two school board members on May 24.

District 2 school board members Sue Brown retained her seat, receiving 65.91 percent of the vote over challenger Stan Roughton.

Incumbent Frank Farmer in the District 2 at-large seat received 70.02 percent of the vote. Challengers included Loreli Scott with 15.5 percent, Monica Terrell with 8.89 percent and Sandra Haner with 5.28 percent of the vote.

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson will retain his seat in Washington, D.C. Isakson received 77.47 percent of the vote, followed by 11.98 percent by Derrick Grayson and 10.55 percent by Fayette County resident and former school board member Mary Kay Bacallao.

Isakson will face off against Democratic challenger Jim Barksdale in the November contest. Barksdale won the May 24 election, receiving 53.84 percent of the vote compared to 42.09 percent garnered by Cheryl Copeland and 4.07 percent received by John Coyle, III.

Coweta had a 16.68 percent voter turn-out for the May 24 contests, with 12,013 ballots cast. Coweta has 72,025 registered voters.
