The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, Newnan-Coweta Art Association and Main Street Newnan present “Art & Architecture” in celebration of May as Historic Preservation Month with a walking tour scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The National Register of Historic Places is joining in celebrating Preservation Month, and Newnan is proud to have five residential neighborhoods and its downtown commercial area designated as National Register historic districts.
The tour is held in conjunction with Main Street Newnan’s seasonal monthly Market Day event.
You are invited to watch as artists from NCAA create paintings of several of downtown Newnan’s historic buildings. They will be working in the “plein air” style.
Artists will be stationed at locations around the Court Square and in the nearby College-Temple historic neighborhood around the Male Academy Museum.
On the Court Square artists will be stationed at the historic 1904 Courthouse, near the Carnegie Library, on the corner in front of the Redneck Gourmet painting the former Virginia House hotel which is now offices, and near the Alamo entertainment venue which served as a community movie theater for decades.
Then stroll or ride a few blocks to the corner of College Street and Temple Avenue where artists will be painting around the Male Academy. The building served as a school for boys in the late 1800s and is now one of three museums operated by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. The historic school will be a subject for the artists, who will also turn their eye on several of the surrounding historic homes.
