Christ’s Church at Whitewater invites the community to “pray for God’s healing and blessing for our country” at noon on the National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 5, at the Gazebo on the Square in Fayetteville.

Several local ministers and laymen will pray for the President, Vice President, Congress, Supreme Court, Pentagon and military, White House and congressional staffs, government agencies, state and local governments, schools, and the churches in America.  Special music will be featured at the gathering.

The National Day of Prayer is a day of observance held each year on the first Thursday in May and was first called for by the first Continental Congress in 1775.

It was established by President Lincoln in 1863. The day was made official in 1952, when President Harry Truman signed it into law. President Reagan amended the law in 1988 to designate the specific day for the observance as the first Thursday in May.

The president signs a proclamation each year, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.

Most presidents have issued annual or special occasion proclamations for a national day of prayer, with the  exceptions of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.
