Ten middle school students from Flat Rock Middle and J.C. Booth Middle will represent Fayette County at the 2016 Georgia MathCounts Competition after taking top honors at the MathCounts South-East Perimeter Chapter Competition.

The students advancing to the state level contest are Brandon Worrell and Reece Overholt of Flat Rock Middle, and Jaehwan Park, Irene Kwon, Jovita Chang, Caroline Zhang, Caden Gradek, Robert Palla, Sam Triplette, and Archie Chaudbury, all of J.C. Booth Middle.

The state competition is March 21 at Georgia Tech. Individual students who place at this competition will advance to the national MathCounts Competition in Washington, D.C. in May.

The J.C. Booth Middle four-person team of Jovita Chang, Caroline Zhang, Irene Kwon, and Jaehwan Park earned second place in the chapter competition, and Jachwan Park was awarded first place in the individual competition.

Teacher Monique Williams is the MathCounts coach for Flat Rock, and teacher Judy Smith is the coach for J.C. Booth.

MathCounts is a national middle school competitive mathematics program consisting of four rounds that test accuracy, problem solving processes, critical thinking processes, teamwork, and speed. The National Society of Professional Engineers and National Society of Mathematics Teachers founded MathCounts, which is sponsored by many corporations, foundations and individuals. The purpose of MathCounts is to help bright minds reach their full potential in mathematics, and instill an appreciation for mathematics.
