Valentine’s Day was made a little sweeter this year for residents at several of Fayette’s senior-adult care facilities.
Students in the Fayette County Public Schools After School Program (ASP) handcrafted approximately 500 Valentine’s Day cards that were distributed among Kindred of LaFayette Healthcare, Dogwood Forest, and Southland Health and Rehabilitation for their residents to enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
Messages on the cards included “Valentines, Valentines, red, white and pink. Give one friend a smile and another a wink,” and “Roses are red, violets are blue. I made this card just for you!” The activity is part of an ongoing effort to involve ASP students in the local community.
“One of the program objectives is to expand our engagement with the community. It’s not only that, but also an opportunity for the children to exercise their endless creativity,” said ASP Coordinator Sharon Walters.
The ASP operates in all elementary schools in the county and provides enriching activities and academic support to students from kindergarten to fifth grade. The program operates every day school is in session; beginning immediately at the end of the school day and going until 6:30 p.m. ASP is self-supporting through parent fees, scholarships and grants.
