The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for Fayette, Coweta and counties in central Georgia beginning at 3 p.m. Friday and ending at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The advisory for the area calls for up to two inches of snow and sleet and up to one-tenth of an inch of ice.
The advisory covers 15 counties mainly along and north of Newnan to Jackson to Sparta. The multi-county area could see up to two inches of snow and up to one-tenth of a inch of sleet and snow, enough to create black ice on roadways.
Locally, NWS is expecting the Fayette and Coweta areas to see less of an impact. NWS said rain is likely before 10 p.m. on Friday, then a chance of rain and snow with a low around 30 degrees and a 60 percent chance of precipitation with less than a half-inch of snow. Winds are expected to be 5-15 miles per hour with gusts of 25 miles per hour.
On Saturday, there is expected to be a 20 percent chance of rain and snow before 11 a.m., along with winds of 15-20 miles per hour and gusts of 40 miles per hour and a high of 39 degrees.
Skies will be partly cloudly Saturday night with a low of 26 and winds gusting to 25 miles per hour.
Sunday is forecast to be sunny with a high near 48.
The school systems in both Fayette and Coweta counties have cancelled extra-currlcular activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
