Work on the dredging of Lake Peachtree continues to wind-down. With it comes the process of restoring Drake Field and a move by the city to add several amenities to the often-used venue.

The Peachtree City Council on Jan. 7 will consider a measure that would restore Drake Field to its original condition after being used as a staging area for the dredging work. The move would also add a stage/gazebo, electrical outlets and low-level lighting.

“The city has identified enhancements to Drake Field including adding electrical outlets, low level lighting and a stage/gazebo to facilitate wider community use of the passive park for community events,” City Manager Jon Rorie said in a Dec. 30 letter. “Funding for the project enhancements is currently budgeted and available.”

The city is asking the Fayette County Commission to issue a $25,000 payment in lieu of the dredging contractor returning Drake Field to it original condition. If approved, the funds would be placed in a special revenue account and would be used only for the repair and revitalization of the Drake Field property.

“Additional park enhancements and returning Drake Field to ‘its original condition’ are not mutually exclusive of each other,” said Rorie. “Instead, the goal should be to complete the projects concurrently and maximize the use of Drake Field as a passive amenity for all to enjoy.”
