Last week’s reclassification meeting produced a new set-up for Georgia High School Association member schools that includes a new seventh classifications of the largest schools.
A few local schools are moving up to higher classifications, while others stay the same. None are moving down.
East Coweta is among those making the move to AAAAAAA, while Northgate goes up to AAAAAA.
McIntosh and Starr’s Mill remain in AAAAA, joined by Fayette County and Whitewater. Sandy Creek remains in AAAA, while Landmark and Our Lady of Mercy stay in A.
These moves mean major changes to region alignments, which have not yet been announced.
The Chiefs and Panthers lose Northgate as a region opponent as well as Mundy’s Mill and Drew, both which go up to AAAAAA. On the other hand, with four Fayette schools in the same classification, the likelihood of having all in the same region is high.
Sandy Creek loses two county schools as region opponents as well as Carrollton, which moves up to AAAAA.
The GHSA resets its classifications every two years. These alignments are in effect for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.
