The two Jewish congregations in Fayette County continue with their observances of the Jewish New Year and High Holy Days.

Congregation B’nai Israel in Fayetteville and Chabad of Peachtree City both began observances this week and will conclude next week beginning with Yom Kippur on Tuesday.

Services marking Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, and continue until late afternoon the following day at Congregation B’nai Israel on Ga. Highway 54, east of downtown Fayetteville near Corinth Road.

The opening service is known as Kol Nidre, an evening observance focused on a cantor’s confession on behalf of the community, which sets the theme for the total Yom Kippur experience of fasting, prayer and repentance.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the day’s observances start with another worship and prayer service beginning at 10 a.m.

It will be followed by a break (because of the penitential nature of the day, no meal will be served).

Then a healing service will be held, followed by individual and group learning sessions starting at 1 p.m.

At 4 p.m. the traditional Yitzkor service will begin, commemorating all those who have died, and ending the High Holy Days which began Sept. 13 with the observance of Rosh Hashanah, marking the start of the New Year of 5776 in the Jewish calendar.

Rabbi Louis Feldstein will lead all services at Congregation B’nai Israel.

Music will be led by Susan Burden, cantorial soloist and pastoral lay leader.

Congregation B’nai Israel, a Reform Jewish synagogue, has members in Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, and Spaulding counties plus other communities in the south Atlanta Metro area.

Chabad of Peachtree City’s continuation of the High Holy Day schedule will be as follows:

Yom Kippur begins on Tuesday evening, Sept. 22. “Kol Nidrei” service is at 7:30 p.m. at the new Tyrone facility, 632 Dogwood Trail.

Yom Kippur day is on Wednesday, Sept.23. Services will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Tyrone facility.

Yizkor service will be approximately at noon.

Final “N’ilah” service will be at 7 p.m. Fast ends at 8:11 p.m.
