The Veterans Memorial at Memorial Patriot Park in Fayetteville will be the site of a re-dedication on Sept. 26.

Located in the center of the 8-acre Memorial Patriot Park at 1100-1102 Redwine Road in Fayetteville, the public is invited to the Sept. 26 event which will include the five mayors of Fayette County’s cities and the color guard and other ceremonial support provided by Georgia Military College.

Originally dedicated in November 2013, the Veterans Memorial was built to honor over 400 Fayette County residents who served in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, and paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

The goal of the re-dedication ceremony is to increase awareness in the community of the Veterans Memorial as a fitting site for celebrations and activities by veterans groups and other civic organizations. Fayette County residents are already using the park’s walking/jogging trails and picnic areas. Now, with the garden complementing the memorial, residents have a beautiful and peaceful place to visit and reflect about the service members who gave their lives for this country, said event organizers.

The original dedication was held prior to completion of landscaping. The city of Fayetteville subsequently asked the University of Georgia Fayette County Extension Office and the Fayette Master Gardeners Association to design and install a memorial garden at the site.

Thanks to the generosity of many local businesses, organizations and private individuals who provided in-kind and monetary donations, the memorial garden is now complete, organizers said.

The majority of the landscaping work was done by Fayette County Extension Master Gardener volunteers and the Fayette Master Gardeners Association. After the re-dedication ceremony, the city will assume ongoing maintenance of the space.
