Design work that could eventually lead to help with traffic conditions along Ga. Highway 54 West at MacDuff Parkway received approval Aug. 6 from the Peachtree City Council.

Following recommendations from interim City Manager Jon Rorie and city staff, the council approved the expenditure of $44,000 for the design work for intersection improvements at Hwy. 54 West and MacDuff Parkway. The council in June approved $54,000 for design work at Planterra Way and Hwy. 54 West.

Recommendations for the MacDuff project include adding a second turn lane, extending the left turn lanes 250 feet and relocating the thru-lane to the MacDuff Crossing retail area on the south side of Hwy. 54. The project could be bid once the design work is completed, enabling construction costs and project timelines for future consideration to be established.

Interim City Manager Jon Rorie said the future project could require the partial or complete closure of the intersection and may not be feasible until the MacDuff Parkway extension is complete.

The council previously approved funds for the design work at Planterra Way and Hwy. 54 West. The design work will include adding a dedicated left-turn lane, extending it to the tennis center and reducing the length of the existing median nose on Hwy. 54. The project also calls for re-striping the intersection to improve turning from the Walmart/Home Depot entrance and eliminating the phased northbound and southbound traffic signal timing.

Also at the Aug. 6 meeting, the decision was made to have three joint traffic improvement projects at Market Place and Commerce Drive on Hwy. 54 and Westpark Drive on Ga. Highway 74 North discussed at the Sept. 17 meeting to give area businesses time to provide input.
