The Fayette County Water System conducted tests earlier this week that could result in some customers experiencing discoloration in their water, although there is no danger, according to a county statement.

Scheduled pump testing at the South Fayette Water Treatment facility was conducted June 23 by engineering consultant CH2M. Some Water System customers may experience discoloration in their water due to the flow changes that occurred during testing, officials stated.

Water System personnel began strategically flushing hydrants June 24 to lessen the appearance of the discolored water.

“This discoloration is present due to trace levels of manganese in the water,” according to the statement. “Although unpleasant in appearance at elevated levels, manganese is not a health risk and the water is safe to drink.”

The Water System will continue flushing hydrants in the affected areas to clear up this temporary issue.
