May is National Stroke Awareness Month and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Newnan is working to educate the community on stroke prevention, awareness and rehabilitation.
This year HealthSouth’s national campaign theme is “Take Action for Stroke” which is meant to encourage everyone to take action on educating themselves and others on stroke prevention and the role of physical rehabilitation in a patient’s recovery.
Throughout the months of April, May and June, HealthSouth Newnan therapists and rehabilitation liaisons have partnered with Piedmont Newnan Hospital Stroke Manager Debbie Camp to present to senior centers throughout Coweta and surrounding counties. Senior centers on the list include Grantville Senior Center, Hogansville Senior Center, Wesley Woods of Newnan, Brookdale Senior Living, Panther Creek Senior Center and Senoia Senior Center.
“It’s important for everyone to learn the facts about stroke and stroke prevention as it can happen to anyone at any time,” said Ilona Wozniak, CEO of HealthSouth Newnan. “Being that our hospital is a leader in stroke rehabilitation care, we feel strongly about stroke survivors starting a rehabilitation program quickly after a stroke. Our team is here to help create an individualized plan for each patient as the effects of stroke vary from patient to patient.”
According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of disability. Approximately 795,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurring stroke, so you never know when you or someone you love will be faced with stroke either as a patient or caregiver.
