State Rep. Virgil Fludd (D-Tyrone) has announced the recipients of the 2015 Fludd Scholarship Award, which is available to graduating high school seniors in south metro Atlanta who plan to attend college and have outstanding academic and community service records.

“The scholarship program was created to recognize the academic performance and community service of students in the south metro area,” said Rep. Fludd.  “We are delighted to be able continue this program and even more excited about helping these young people with their college careers. The number of applications rises each year, which makes the selection process a challenge. We have a lot of great young people, and we need to support them as much as possible. There are so many deserving students in this area, and I wish we could do more.”

Recipients of the 2015 Fludd Scholarship Award include Shakira Shivers of Banneker, Sasha Smith of Whitewater, and Taylour Butler and Nicolas Eatman of Sandy Creek. In addition, each scholarship recipient from 2014 is eligible for a scholarship renewal for the upcoming academic year.

Rep. Fludd founded the Fludd Scholarship Program in 2006 to recognize student achievement, and the program is funded by the annual Virgil Fludd Scholarship Golf Tournament. This golf tournament, held each October during Columbus Day weekend, brings in contributions from business and community sponsors, as well as golfers of all skill levels. This year’s tournament is scheduled for Oct. 12 at Canongate Creek Golf Club in Sharpsburg.

Rep. Fludd represents the citizens of District 64, which includes portions of Fayette and Fulton counties. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2002, and currently serves on the Banks & Banking, Ethics, Regulated Industries, Small Business Development, and Ways & Means committees.
