The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (Metro Water District), which includes Fayette and Coweta counties, is participating in the national “Fix a Leak Week” March 16 – 22.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than one trillion gallons of water are wasted every year from easy-to-fix leaks. This amount roughly equals the annual household water use of more than 11 million homes.

During this week, officials of the planning district recommend the following:

  • Check for leaks. Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, sprinklers and other fixtures. Also check for toilets with silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank, waiting 15 minutes to see if color appears in the bowl before you flush.  Don’t forget to check irrigation systems and spigots too.
  • Twist on a new aerator. To save water without a noticeable difference in flow in your bathroom, twist on a WaterSense labeled faucet aerator. Also, tighten hose and pipe connections.
  • Replace the fixture if necessary. Look for WaterSense labeled models, which are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.

Further celebrate by participating in the Metro Water District’s 3rd Annual Water Drop Dash, a 5K race and family water Festival Saturday, March 21.

This Peachtree Road Race qualifier caps off Fix a Leak Week and takes place at the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. The course is fast and flat along the banks of the Chattahoochee River.

The water festival follows with a children’s fun run with mascots, prizes, activities, games, crafts and sponsors’ booths.

Race participants will receive a t-shirt and enjoy free admission to the Chattahoochee Nature Center all day on race day.
