Fayette County in December saw a slight drop in the unemployment rate to 5.8 percent. Peachtree City also saw a decrease in the jobless rate, now at 4.9 percent. Both are at their lowest points since the fall of 2008.
Put another way, fewer people are currently looking for work in both Fayette and Peachtree City than in the past six years.
Unemployment figures for December released by the Ga. Dept. of Labor (DOL) showed Fayette County with a jobless rate of 5.8 percent, down from the 5.9 percent rate in November.
Fayette County has a workforce of 52,522, with 3,039 of those unemployed in December. That’s slightly higher than the 51,346 workers reported in late 2009.
In Peachtree City, the 5.3 percent rate in November decreased four-tenths of a point to 4.9 percent. The December figure represents 821 people without work in a workforce of 16,618.
The 28-county metro Atlanta area, which includes Fayette County, saw jobless numbers remain the same in December at 6.6 percent.
The number of jobs in Metro Atlanta increased to 2,514,000, up by 5,500, or 0.2 percent, from 2,508,500 in November, according to DOL.
Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 4.9 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 8.8 percent.
Looking at unemployment statewide, Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for December was 6.9 percent, down from 7.2 percent in November. It was 7.4 percent in December 2013.
