Definitions and conditional uses for private hunting and fishing clubs were amended by the Coweta County Commission on Jan. 22.

While the general regulations in the ordinance did not change, county Planning Director Robert Tolleson told commissioners the aim of the amendment’s conditional uses was to clarify the distinction between definitions such as a public or private hunting or fishing club.

Commissioners agreed, and voted unanimously to adopt the proposed changes.

Apparently prompting the ordinance amendment were complaints by residents over a shots being fired at the site of a club on Reese Road.

Some of those speaking during public comments were shooting advocates, though one said a shooting range does not have bullets coming onto adjacent property.

Another speaker said the Reese Road club was being blamed for things that happened at other clubs, adding that he supported the ordinance amendment as presented.

Also speaking was Sheriff Mike Yeager, who took issue with a statement that the Reese Road club had been cleared by sheriff’s staff.

Yeager said his staff “did not clear it as being a safe zone,” adding that he had concerns about bullets entering other people’s property.
