Slow traffic conditions along portions of Lower Fayetteville Road have existed for years. But a portion of the back-ups in the area of the Centre for Performing and Visual and Arts and the Newnan Centre will be mitigated with the construction of a roundabout west of the current entrance.
Situated immediately to the west of the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts, the Newnan Centre that opened last year will have its own entrance once the roundabout project is completed.
“The work generally consists of construction of a three legged roundabout intersection, an entry road into the Newnan Centre, a sidewalk, landscaping, lighting and guardrail on Lower Fayetteville Road. This will result in a second entrance to the Newnan Centre complex,” said city engineer William Klahr.
With the initial stages of the roundabout now underway, the project is expected to be completed by March 1.
The $1.266 million bid went to Southeastern Site Development. The project is being funded by 2007 and 2013 special purpose local option sales tax revenues.
Traffic difficulties sometimes occur at the entrance to the two facilities since there is no traffic signal for those traveling westbound and wanting to make a left turn to access the two centers.
While some may consider that a traffic signal or a stop sign is preferable to a roundabout, one need look no further than the roundabout at Lower Fayetteville Road and Greison Trail.
The traffic flow along Lower Fayetteville at rush hour would easily have cars traveling eastbound backed-up 20-30 deep. But all that changed when the roundabout opened.
