Unemployment figures in Coweta and Fayette counties continue to head in the right direction. Jobless figures for February fell to 6.5 percent in Coweta and 6.2 percent in Fayette.
Figures for February released by the Ga. Dept. of Labor show Coweta County with an unemployment rate of 6.5 percent. That represents a decrease from 6.8 percent in January and 8.1 percent one year ago. Coweta has a workforce of 63,521.
Similarly in Fayette County, the February rates show 6.2 percent of the workforce without employment compared to 6.5 percent in January and 7.5 percent a year ago. Fayette’s workforce totals 52,379 residents.
The two largest cities in Coweta and Fayette also saw decreases in the unemployment rate in February. Newnan’s January rate of 7.6 percent decreased to 7.2 percent in February. It was just a year ago that Newnan’s unemployment rate was 9.4 percent.
Peachtree City’s drop in unemployment rates over the past year was not as dramatic, though it was significant. The February jobless rate of 6 percent came on the heels of a 6.3 percent rate in January and a 6.9 percent rate a year ago.
Viewed from a regional perspective, figures for the 10-county Three Rivers Regional Commission area that includes Coweta showed a jobless rate of 7.9 percent, down from the 8.1 percent rate in January and the 10 percent rate a year ago.
The 10-county Atlanta Regional Commission area that includes Fayette also saw gains in the job market. Figures for February show a 6.9 percent unemployment rate. That compares to a 7.1 percent rate in January and an 8.3 percent rate a year ago.
Georgia also saw a decline in jobless numbers in February. The 7.3 percent rate in January dropped slightly to 7.1 percent in February. Those numbers compare to the 8.5 percent rate a year ago.
