Working constructively to implement a business vision is better than sitting home and playing video games. That was the message March 3 from 22-year-old Steven Porrello as he asked the Coweta County Commission for guidance on how a group of skateboarders might work to establish an outdoor skateboard park in Coweta.
A Coweta resident, Porrello during public comments at the conclusion of the meeting told commissioners he was interested in having an outdoor skateboard park established in the county.
“We’ve created a vision that we can execute,” Porrello said, acknowledging the group, ages 18-24, that accompanied him to the meeting and filled one of the rows of seats in the meeting room. “We really do have a vision. This is better than sitting around playing video games or watching reality TV.”
Porrello explained that Coweta had an indoor skateboard park a few years ago, but the facility closed after the business was sold and the new owner subsequently shut it down.
“It’s four years later and we’re still here,” Porrello said of the skateboarders in Coweta still wanting a place to participate in the sport. Porrello estimated that there are approximately 1,000 people in Coweta interested in having an outdoor skateboard park.
As a first step in realizing the group’s vision, Porrello was advised by commissioners to check with the county planning department to determined which areas of the county are zoned for an outdoor skateboard facility.
