A mystery rider on a stolen motorcycle twice led Fayette County law officers on chases from north Fayette into Clayton County Feb. 16 before he crashed into a vehicle in Riverdale and died of his injuries.
He remains nameless because he was carrying no identification, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb.
Babb said the first time a deputy tried to stop the sport bike motorcycle speeding and without a tag near the intersection of Ga. Highway 279 and Helmer Road.
“The driver sped away from the deputy on Helmer Road and entered Clayton County. Fayette County sheriff’s patrol supervisor terminated the pursuit as they entered Clayton County,” Babb said.
For reasons unknown, the driver of the motorcycle returned to Fayette County a short time later where deputies again attempted to stop the motorcycle at Ga. Highway 85 at Pavilion Parkway.
“As deputies pursued again, the driver sped back to Clayton County,” said Babb. “Fayette County patrol supervisors again terminated the pursuit before entering Clayton County.”
Babb said deputies later learned that the motorcycle was involved in a crash at Ga. Highway 85 and Webb Road in Riverdale.
Babb said Clayton County Police conducted a traffic investigation at the site of the crash and learned the motorcycle was stolen and the rider was dead at the scene.
