The Fayette County Public Library invites the public to an all-ages launch party celebrating the release of Vincent Wolf’s second children’s book, “The Boy with Hearts for Hair,” today from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. On the agenda for the afternoon are a range of activities, including a dramatic reading of the story, a family-friendly presentation on bullying, question and answer with the author/illustrator, a game of “Pin the Hearts on the Hair,” free refreshments, and a book signing. The Fayette County Faith-based Disaster Network will hold its annual conference on today at New Hope Baptist Church.
The keynote speaker will be former Adairsville City Manager Pat Cook, who will speak on the faith-based recovery effort that followed tornadoes that struck the city last year. Breakout sessions will include presentations such as praise and preparedness in your church, active shooter planning in your church, an amateur radio emergency service overview, disaster team overview, emerging threats and protecting yourself, using social media in disasters, the National Weather Service and an overview of the Ga. Emergency Management Agency.
The conference is free though an RSVP is required due to limited seating. RSVP no later than Feb. 3 if planning to attend. Conference registration begins at 8:15 a.m. on the day of the event. The Sandy Creek High School Choral Department presents the 2014 Miss Sandy Creek Pageant at 7:30 p.m. at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $10 at the door. The pageant is the most important fundraiser of the year for SCHS choral programs. Contestants will compete for prizes and scholarship money. Scoring of the pageant has three components: teacher recommendations (25 percent), an interview with the judges (50 percent), and the evening gown presentation (25 percent). The first two components are scored prior to Saturday evening’s pageant.
During the pageant, a song from SCHS’s upcoming spring musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” will be performed by the cast of the show. In addition, several young men from the SCHS Chorus will provide entertainment with a men’s formalwear presentation.
The SCHS Choral Department invites the community to support the school’s choral programs during an evening that celebrates some of the outstanding young women of SCHS.

Robert J. Burch Elementary will be having its fourth annual Burch Bear Tracks today at 8 a.m. and includes Tot Trot, Mile Fun Run, and a 5K race. The primary goal for this event is to promote health and wellness through fitness as well as raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their effort to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. The secondary goal is to fund Burch’s running club in which hundreds of students participate.
