The dredging of Lake Peachtree is on indefinite hold as the Fayette County Water System prepares to bring on a new engineering firm, Peachtree City Manager Jim Pennington told the Peachtree City Council last week.
“It’s very clear they will not be able to do anything for us until they have a new engineer,” Pennington said.
Public Works Director Mark Caspar informed council that the Army Corps of Engineers has informed the county it will not need to undertake any mitigation measures in order to dredge accumulated silt from the bottom of the lake.
Lake Peachtree is owned by the city, though it is used as a drinking water reservoir through an agreement with the Fayette County Water System. That agreement calls for the lake bed to be dredged once every 10 years.
Pennington said the city is working with the water system to see if lagoons leading into the lake can be dredged as well to provide the city with a cost savings for that service.
The county may have a new engineering firm selected in the next several weeks, as companies were in the interview process at the end of this week. County officials have an eye on making a recommendation to the county commission for action at its regular Sept. 19 meeting.
