Fayette County officials may soon consider a change to its restrictions on golf cart drivers, with the idea of allowing students to drive golf carts to the campus of Starr’s Mill High School.
In Peachtree City, students can drive a golf cart on their own if they have a learner’s permit. But in the unincorporated county, students can only drive a cart if they have a full-fledged driver’s license, county officials said.
The public is invited to attend Thursday night’s Fayette County Commission meeting to hear a briefing that will be presented on the matter from high school intern Jason Girolami. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the county’s Stonewall government complex in downtown Fayetteville.
In a news release, county officials note that McIntosh High School sophomores and some juniors are able to drive themselves to school and back home on a golf cart.
There is another complication in the mix beyond the county’s current license restrictions for cart drivers. There is no golf cart path leading from the end of the Redwine Road path to the Starr’s Mill campus. School system officials don’t want the carts to mix on the road with regular automobile traffic.
While County Commission Chairman Steve Brown and school system officials have discussed the need for such a path, no funding has yet been devised.
Parents in a number of subdivisions in the county along the Redwine path have asked the county to create better golf cart access for Starr’s Mill students, county officials have said.
