Two video broadcast students at the Central Educational Center (CEC) have been awarded a 2013 High School Student Production Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), Southeast.
NATAS has given an Outstanding Achievement award to a video project produced by CEC students Amber Rogers of Newnan High School and Leah Galliot of Northgate High School in the General Assignment Excellence area.
The project by Galliot and Rogers was a short video feature about the “Barbie Beach” located along Ga. Highway 16 in Turin. The pair filmed and produced the segment as a student project to appear on NuLink’s “The Link” television program, said Coweta County School System spokesman Dean Jackson.
Rogers and Galliot, both of whom graduated last week, produced the segment in the spring of 2012, when they were juniors, Jackson said.
“I was thrilled when we won, but I was surprised,” said Galliot. “This was one of our very first projects.”
Jackson said the video clip was one of the few that they were able to submit to NATAS as student work, because both had gained professional video experience over the past year as student interns with NuLink or filming and producing public service announcements for various professional projects. Only work produced as a part of their high school curriculum could be entered.
Rogers and Galliot were in Michael Britt’s video production classes at CEC as juniors and seniors, said Jackson.
“Mr. Britt is a wonderful teacher,” said Rogers. “He treats us as students, but also as professionals in what we do. We have gotten so many opportunities and so much experience while we’re still in high school.”
Commenting on the award, Britt said he encouraged Rogers and Galliot to enter their work for the NATAS student awards “because they are looking for the best of the best among high school students and the work itself is judged by professionals in this industry. I was confident of their talent, and am pleased that they got this kind of experience.”
Both Galliot and Rogers say they plan to continue their studies and work in video production.
The award was scehduled to be presented at the June 8 NATAS awards ceremony in Atlanta.
