Fayetteville will soon begin to close the gaps in sidewalks located along Ga. Highway 54 on the east and west sides of the city. The approval for the installation of those sidewalks came by unanimous vote by the Fayetteville City Council on May 16.
City Director of Public Services Chris Hindman said the projects include filling gaps in sidewalks along Hwy. 54 between Gwinnett Street and Robinson Drive on the city’s east side and between the city cemetery and Burch Road on the west side.
The city received seven bids for the overall project. The low bid from Stone Mountain-based Summit Construction and Development totaled $366,968 and was approved by the council by unanimous vote. The high bid was $564,748.
The approval is contingent on a notice to proceed required by the Ga. Dept. of Transportation (DOT), Hindman said, adding that he hopes to receive DOT approval in approximately one month.
The sidewalk project includes 80 percent funding from federal funds, with the 20 percent local coming from existing one-percent sales tax (SPLOST) funds.
Once completed, the sidewalk project will fill all but one of the gaps that currently exist along the Hwy. 54 corridor. The only area that will remain is in front of the cemetery on Stonewall Avenue. Hindman said he is currently working with DOT to have that project approved.
