Fayette County Water System officials reported Tuesday that complaints from residents in north and central Peachtree City about a peculiar odor and taste in their drinking water is not cause for alarm. The problem is being resolved and the water is safe to drink, officials said.
Complaints from area residents began late last week, but Water System Director Tony Parrott said May 7 the “musky” odor in the water is no reason for alarm.
“Upon receiving complaints, the water system immediately dispatched staff to investigate the situation,” Parrott said. “It has been determined that the odor is due to a reaction from chlorine and the water from Lake Peachtree. The reaction was caused by a significant change in water temperature.”
Parrott said water system staff have been working diligently to resolve the situation. They diverted water from the south Fayette water plant into the system and are currently receiving a diminished number of complaints, Parrott said.
“The water is completely safe to drink,” said Parrott.
Parrott explained that because of the size of the water distribution system in the county totaling 650 miles of water lines, the issue with the odor could remain for a few days until the water is flushed through the system, Parrott said.
In a separate issue, Parrott said water system staff had received no complaints about a metallic taste in drinking water coming from areas around Lester Road in central Fayette County, although The Citizen has received at least one complaint.
