It is every player and team’s dream to score the winning goal, or beat a seemingly unbeatable team. For Starr’s Mill’s lacrosse team, that dream came true April 25 with a 9-8 victory over Lovett. Lovett High School was 55-0 in area play and Starr’s Mill was not to be playoff bound this year. Lovett got off to an early start and controlled most of the first half going into halftime with a 4-1 lead. The third quarter was a back and forth battle with teams taking advantage of mistakes and entered the fourth quarter with an 8-4 Lovett lead. Now the excitement and change of momentum begins. The Panthers scored early in the fourth making it a three point game, but the game came to a lull again until roughly four minutes remained on the clock. It was Lovett’s ball with a defender inbounding the ball from the end line, and he lofted the ball to what he believed to be an open goalie until senior captain Kevin Yoggy stepped in front, intercepted the ball and came around the crease to score to cut the lead to two. One minute later, Yoggy threaded a ball to a cutting Grant Aasen down the middle and Aasen scored to cut the lead to one. Junior face fff specialist Marco Amalfitano had been dominating at the X most of the day and came up big again and won the next face off and moved the ball down the field to Yoggy who found junior Cameron Chambers standing on the right side of the goal for a quick shot to tie the game with 30 seconds. The game then headed to overtime. The team responded several minutes later when Amalfitano and Aasen hooked up with a give and go that resulted in a game winning goal by Grant Aasen.
