World Gym owner Dar Thompson wants to close one gym and to build a new facility in the Lexington Circle retail center off Ga. Highway 54 East in Peachtree City.
The 2.28 acre site would be located adjacent to the townhomes on the property and also the Governors Row subdivision. There is a 50-foot city owned greenbelt separating the site from the Governors Row residents.
The two-story building includes the main gym on the first floor with 21,875 sq. ft. and a mezzanine on the second level of 6,783 sq. ft.
The plan got a first review in a workshop meeting of the planning commission Monday night.
Thompson said he plans to close the current World Gym location that is a short distance outside the city limits on Hwy. 54.
The facility would include an indoor pool and 102 parking spaces in addition to the common parking spaces included in the development.
One of the elements the planning commission expects on the next version of the plan is a way to screen the nearby homes from the development. Another outstanding issue is how pedestrians and golf carts will get to the site.
The commission is expected to vote on the site plan at a future meeting.
The building has an 80-percent brick front and a large amount of glass on the exterior as well, according to project architect Jefferson Brown. The exterior also has faux balconies to carry on the architectural theme laid out for the development.
