There will be no shortage of candidates in the Feb. 5 special election to fill the District 71 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives. Qualifying time ended Wednesday with five Republicans and one Democrat vying for the House seat vacated by Robert Stokely prior to his taking office. District 71 includes a large part of east Coweta County and a portion of Peachtree City’s west side.
Two of the Republican candidates qualifying earlier last week announced their intention last month. Those included 48-year-old Sharpsburg attorney Darryl Marmon and 41-year-old north Coweta County business owner David Stover.
Rounding the list of six qualifiers were three more Republicans and one Democrat. The lone Democrat was 57-year-old Newnan educator Cynthia Conradt Bennett.
And completing the list of Republican qualifiers was 45-year-old Sharpsburg general contractor Thomas G. Crymes, 57-year-old Newnan retiree Michael Farbo, Jr. and 59-year-old Sharpsburg real estate broker Richard Weisser.
District 71 includes much of east Coweta County, excluding the Senoia area, and a portion of northwest side of Peachtree City west of Ga. Highway 74, north of Ga. Highway 54 and extending to the Tyrone town limits.
Though he won the House seat, Stokely in December opted to forego the position in favor of serving in the full-time capacity as a Coweta County Magistrate Judge.
A likely run-off election for the District 71 seat will be held March 5.
