The Winnie Davis Medal is awarded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to honor members of the organization and to express appreciation to them for their contributions beyond the required duties.
The medal is named for Varina Anne Davis, called Winnie by her family. She was the youngest child of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, and his wife Varina Davis. Winnie was introduced in April 1866 by General John B. Gordon to a group of Veterans in Georgia as “The Daughter of the Confederacy.” In Miss Davis’ frequent public appearances during her short lifetime; she presented with great fervor the objectives of the Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
The education of Southern children was one of her personal objectives as well. The organization recognizes the zeal of Miss Davis by presenting deserving members the Winnie Davis Medal.
The award, medal and certificate were bestowed on Linda Robinson by the Frankie Lyle Chapter 2074, U.D.C. at a recent luncheon held at the Fayette County Library.
Linda’s vision of erecting a Christmas tree to honor veterans was soon realized and plans to erect a tree were finalized. For the past four years a tree has been placed in front of the American Legion Post 105 on Fayetteville’s Main Street. The chapter sold ornaments to residents wishing to honor a veteran.
Ornaments bearing the name and branch of service of the veteran were placed on the tree. Approximately $2,500 has been raised. With the proceeds from the sale of ornaments, the Chapter has been able to support today’s veterans at home and abroad. Money was donated to Honor Flight to sponsor several World War II veterans who flew to Washington DC to visit the monument erected in their honor. Veterans in assisted living homes were adopted by the Chapter and over 50 United Daughters of the Confederacy Crosses of Military Service have been bestowed on worthy Veterans.
Because of Linda’s efforts, the Chapter has been able to accomplish many worthwhile patriotic projects. The Chapter is finalizing plans to erect another tree this year.
