With the lease on its Harley Davidson motorcycle ending next month, the Peachtree City Police Department is asking the city council to approve the purchase of a different brand.
The item was added to the agenda Wednesday afternoon for tonight’s council meeting.
The Victory Commander I will cost nearly $100 a month more than the current lease on the Harley Davidson Road King, but the city will save maintenance costs estimated at $210 a year. Also, at the end of its five-year service time the Commander 1 will have an estimated residual value of between $10,000 and $12,000 according to a memo from Police Chief H.C. “Skip” Clark.
By using the city’s brand name purchase policy, the city will not need to seek bids from different companies.
The police department has evaluated several other police motorcycles in addition to the Harley unit that is currently in service via a lease program.
Clark is recommending the brand name purchase of the Victory bike because it includes “exclusive built in tip over technology and pinned and fixed floorboards for protection of feet and ankles.” Also, Victory provides a five-year unlimited mile warranty compared to two years from Harley Davidson and Victory also installs aftermarket equipment for free, warrantying the labor for five years also, according to Clark.
The city will use its master equipment lease for an interest rate of below 1.5 percent instead of Victory’s lease rate of more than 5 percent, Clark noted.
