If you’re over 65, own your home and are willing to fill out a little extra paperwork this year, Peachtree City will knock $33 off your property tax bill.
The age cutoff date is Jan. 1, 2012, and applicants must also have already applied for the standard homestead tax exemption through the Fayette County Tax Commissioner’s Office.
Another catch is that the household income must be less than $30,000, calculated on the federal adjusted gross income of the applicant and his or her spouse.
The exemption will reduce the assessed value of a home by $5,000 for those who qualify, calculating out to a $33 savings, city officials said.
Qualifying seniors must bring proof of age and income via a copy of their 2011 tax returns to City Hall to file for the exemption.
The deadline to file is 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 1. Because the deadline to file taxes is April 15, the city will continue to accept proof of income through April 20 for persons who registered before March 1.
